I contenuti

>>The art museum stands in the light of Lake Constance. It is made of glass and steel and a cast concrete stone mass which endows the interior of the building with texture and spatial composition. From the outside, the building looks like a lamp.

It absorbs the changing light of the sky, the haze of the lake, it reflects light and colour and gives an intimation of its inner life

according to the angle of vision, the daylight and the weather.<<

Peter Zumthor, Architect

The Kunsthaus Bregenz began to collect contemporary Austrian art in 1991. The collection begins in the 80s with works by that younger generation of artists which broke away from the determining traditions of postwar Austrian art in favour of a more international orientation (for example Bohatsch, Brandl, Kogler, Kopf, F. Pichler, Rockenschaub, Scheibl, Schmalix, Ströhle, Türtscher, West, Wurm, Zobernig, among others). Acquisitions of groups of works by the most important artists set focal points.

The collection of contemporary Austrian art concentrates on painting, sculpture, object- and conceptual art. Video art, mixed media and photography are also taken into consideration. The goal of the collection is the continuous documentation of contemporary Austrian art. Until the collection achieves museum scale, quality, and unity (in about ten years), it will be regularly exhibited in parts, in its own various aspects as well as in relation to the exhibition program.

Since the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is a national museum, the international orientation of its collection corresponds to the character of national galleries as have become common since the end of the Second World War. The collection is still young, yet it presents a clear profile. Altogether, the collection of the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein presents a highly individual profile, not untypical for museums of its size. It is interested in making the museum attractive and recognizable for an international public by concentrating on special aspects and focal points within the collection. This does not mean that the museum´s public educational duties towards the regional population cannot be carried out as fully as possible.

The creation of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, officially inaugurated in 1995, was one of a series of actions carried out in Barcelona during the eighties and the first half of the nineties, the purpose of which was the urban restructuring of the city and its orientation toward an outward-looking economy centred fundamentally on the tertiary sector and in particular on tourism. The changes experienced by Barcelona during these years and are part of the transformations our society has undergone in a wake of the globalization of capital, production and the market. More than in any other period, financial flows have assumed a universal dimension, determining our perception of the world and how we organize ourselves within it. We are not, of course, dealing with a new phenomenon here: the globalization of the late 20th century is, after all, a direct continuation of the colonialisms of the 19th century. However, the territories being captured now are no longer those far-off, little-known places so superbly described in the novels of Conrad or Kipling, but the space of our own privacy, our ambits of freedom and creation. The modes of singular subjectivization are promoted, but only in order to reproduce these, severing them from their connection with life and converting them into commodities, into a kind of pret-à-porter identity, as Suely Rolnik has observed elsewhere.

In this context, the museum runs the risk of being confused with the theme park, and the history it may be intended to narrate is located in a continuous present, disguised as false memory, in which relationships between individuals are based solely on consumption, and the political subject is supplanted by the consumer. If the museum is to have any real significance in these circumstances, it is necessary for us to redefine our notion of memory: this needs to be, more than a strict recording of the past, an opening toward the future, making visible what society hides and excludes. What defines the individual memory is its richness, its capacity for mobilization, for permitting sudden associations and facilitating almost unforeseen evocations.

Background

The Centre national d’art et de culture Georges Pompidou was the birthchild of President Georges Pompidou who wanted to create an original cultural institution in the heart of Paris completely focused on modern and contemporary creation where the visual arts would rub shoulders with theater, music, cinema, books and the spoken word…

Housed in the heart of Paris, in a building whose architecture symbolizes the spirit of the 20th century designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the Pompidou Center first opened its doors to the public in 1977. Renovated from 1997 to December 1999, it was opened again to the public on January 1 2000, with extended museum space and enhanced reception areas. Since then it has once more become one of the most frequently visited monuments in France. Some 6 million people pass annually through the Pompidou Center’s doors, making a total of over 150 million visitors during the 25 years or so of its existence.

Missions

In a unique location under a single roof, the Pompidou Center houses one of the most important museums in the world, featuring the leading collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe, a vast public reference library with over 2,000 places to work, general documentation on 20th century art, cinema and performance halls, an institute for musical research, educational activity areas, bookshops, a restaurant and a café.

Unswerving in its interdisciplinary vocation and its main mission –to provide knowledge on all creative works of the 20th century and those that herald the new millenium- each year the Pompidou Center proposes thirty or so exhibitions destined for the public as well as numerous events –fiction cinema cycles, documentaries, conferences and symposiums, concerts, dance performances and educational activities- at international level, many of which go on to other venues, both in France and abroad.

Founded in 1901 to 'bring great art to the people of the East End of London', the Whitechapel Art Gallery occupies a distinctive arts and crafts building designed by Charles Harrison Townsend. Its first exhibition, which included the Pre-Raphaelites, Constable, Hogarth and Rubens, attracted 206,000 local people. The programme has ranged from showcasing art from Africa, India and Latin America to premiering solo emerging figures such as Picasso, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. Through exhibitions such as the Whitechapel Open, the gallery has promoted artists who live and work in the East End of London.

Awash with light, our high-vaulted gallery spaces are among the most inspiring venues in London and are available to hire individually or as a whole.

Every year the Whitechapel holds between four and five exhibitions, each of which alters the character of the three galleries dramatically.

Exhibitions last for around eight weeks and can provide a unique backdrop for corporate entertaining and private events.

It is also possible to hire the galleries free of artwork, as for four weeks a year the galleries are left empty specifically for private hire. During these 'free space' periods the galleries are transformed again and clients are able to host large scale events such as sit-down dinners-dances, conferences and filming that would normally be impossible in the presence of artwork.

In 1999, the gallery organized the very first exhibition in France of Ana Mendieta (1948 - 1985), the seminal performance artist, whose work is at the junction between body art and land art.The artist Georges Adeagbo from Benin, who is now exhibited in many international venues, including Documenta XI, had his first and only gallery show in Paris, with us in 1997.

In 1998, Nathalie Obadia chose to move to New York for a month by renting a gallery space in Chelsea. The exhibition “February in New York” was devoted to the promotion of the French artists of the gallery.

The key mission of Kiasma is to make contemporary art known to the public and strengthen its position by maintaining active contact with both artists and the public. The operative strategy of Kiasma is based on the concept of a centre for visual culture. The museum functions as a public meeting place, with a view to creating lively, continuous contact between contemporary art and art audiences, and making contemporary artworks an everyday part of people's lives.

One special dimension of the Museum of Contemporary Art operations is its living contact with the act of creating art ? with artists. As part of this goal, the museum recognises the diversity and plurality of the field of contemporary art. It seeks to support this in all areas, including methods and techniques, as well as strategies and philosophies. Experimentation, process, and happening are essential elements of the work of today's artists; as is artists working within the museum as a part of the whole. Kiasma is exceptionally well-equipped to serve this end.

Seeking to develop the concept of a museum, the keynotes of Kiasma's activities are diversity and plurality in art. It highlights not only the physical space of the museum, but also the museum as a conceptual space ? a framework for transmitting, producing, and interpreting art.

Implementation of the Strategy

Kiasma has actively engaged in the development of new forms of producing art. Artists are provided opportunities for working in the museum, where they have a broad range of technological equipment at their disposal. The museum has also taken an active role in the production of ideas for projects, as well as their development and realisation. The aim of Kiasma is to promote diversity, cross-disciplinarity in art, and a broad understanding of visual culture. It brings international art into a Finnish context, and also presents Finnish art in international contexts.

The museum purchases works in a geographically widening spiral, the main emphasis being on art from Finland and nearby areas. Preservation, research, conservation, and maintenance form an integral aspect of the broadening of the museum's collections. Cultural heritage is also preserved by maintaining an archive of images and videos, as well as a research library, and by providing expert services.

Kiasma's concept of a cultural centre is also broad enough to accommodate performances, in addition to traditional museum activities. The public is offered changing shows, collection exhibitions, performances in the Kiasma Theatre, as well as seminars and lectures. Moreover, Kiasma participates in projects involving art in the cityscape, and presents visual culture on the Kiasma Stage.

The ground floor with its Caf>=, Kiasma Store, Newspaper Corner, children's activity room, seminar room, and Rear Window is a natural meeting place and it also lowers the threshold for visiting the exhibitions. Long opening hours and the policy of one admission price also support this goal.

Visitors to Kiasma are provided with information through a wide variety of media. The museum makes a special effort to develop network communication. Educational services offer information and clues for interpretation, discussions about and around art, as well as various activities. Kiasma also engages in publishing activities, producing, for example, the Kiasma Magazine, exhibition catalogues, the 'Question Mark' series, special publications and brochures.
